Investopedia has a great article on stock-picking strategies which outlines why stock-picking is more of an art rather than a science.

We all seem to have our different methods for picking stocks and of course, we all want to buy stock that produces double digit returns. After doing some research on how to pick stocks, I’ve come to the conclusion that there really is no one surefire way to pick stocks and be guaranteed a return.
